Gopher tortoises eat about 200 different plants, mostly grasses, legumes and fruit. They farm just beyond the apron of their burrow, removing plants they do not want and encouraging those that they do. It’s helpful when it’s cold out not to have to go far too eat. They forage about 45 minutes a day, but can go without eating for as many as 45 days.
So, just because you haven’t seen your tortoise doesn’t mean filling the borrow won’t intern a living creature or that s/he won’t be returning like a snowbirds does!
